BCHS Pupils Take Part in National Research
17/05/2022

Children from BCHS have been ‘co researchers’ in national research!

The research has been finding out what children think about nature in green spaces. The children worked alongside other groups in schools and clubs in the North, Northwest, and South of England and with researchers from the University of Central Lancashire and Dialogue Matters.

Natural England (the government body for nature) wanted this research done to learn what kinds of nature and green spaces children and young people value and need. They also want to find good questions to ask other children in a national survey.

The children started the research in a mixed group in school. They created and talked about collages of their ideal nature places. They also talked about what they like or dislike about real places near the school or where they live. Next, all the groups met online to hear what they were discovering. Later, back in their group in school, these young researchers sorted their ideas into different aspects of what matters about natural outdoor spaces, and suggested questions for the survey. Then, in another online session, they tried out the survey questions and said how it could be even better.

These young co-researchers made a difference. Their voices and input will help shape the future of nature spaces for children and young people in England.

The teams from University of Central Lancashire, Dialogue Matters and Natural England thank all the children for their wonderful work as co-researchers.

Pupils in year 7 are invited to take the survey!
