Children across the borough will be given the opportunity to dissect a human body*, when an award-winning live operating show returns to East Lancashire. Operating Theatre Live, which was seen on BBC's Dragon's Den, is bringing its interactive dissection show to Blackburn Central High School on Thursday February 20.

During the show, students will take on the role of trauma doctors and bring the systems of the human body alive by dissecting real specimens.

Led by human anatomist Samuel Piri and his team of clinicians, the event will challenge students to explore careers in medicine and healthcare in a mission to raise engagement in STEM (science, technology, English and maths) subjects.

Mr Piri said:

"I personally write the academic content and produce all of the activities myself.
"I and my team guarantee a breath-taking, unforgettable trip through the human body like never before.
"Each student will leave stretched and challenged having made measurable progress against the science specification, we've got them all covered - GCSE, A Levels BTEC's Scottish National 5 and Highers."

Operating Theatre Live is the UK’s only touring surgical experience offering an educational experience matched to UK exam specifications.

Students will work systematically through a complete dissection of the human body and be taught a variety of important clinical skills including interpreting X-rays and linking symptoms to clinical diagnosis.

And a post-mortem style experience will allow students to look at disease and pathology, working on real specimens using real surgeons’ tools.

They will also discover the intricate structures and how they function to keep us alive.

The event is open to students aged 14-19 who live within a 20 mile radius of Blackburn Central High School, and who are interested in studying anatomy, medicine or pathology at a higher level.

Tickets can be purchased via the Operating Theatre Live website operatingtheatrelive.co.uk and cost £70 or £160, depending on the session the student wants to take.

*Please note that students will not be dissecting a real human body. They will be working with animal organs in a human format.
