Headteacher’s Blog – October 2017

Every half term is busy and this one is no exception. Our students have had numerous opportunities to take part in a wide range of enrichment events.

These have included visiting Cambridge and Lancaster Universities to support raising their aspirations. Our Year 10 students attended a careers event at Blackburn Cathedral to help them with thinking about their futures. There have also been visits to BAE Systems to see STEM ‘subjects come to life’ and Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre to see the workings of the Lovell Telescope. A group of Key Stage 4 students have taken part in a health and biology workshop at UCLAN.

Our mums and daughters club, which have been meeting on Fridays at 2:50pm, has been a great success and we hope to launch something similar for dads and lads.

Thank you to all parents who attended our Raising Achievement evenings, there was a different focus for each year group. Year 11 parents took part in a series of workshops all focusing on supporting their child with revision, particularly with their practice exams starting on Thursday 23rd November. All Year 11 students have been given their timetable and a copy can be found on our website.

A further thank you for your support in ensuring your children attend school, our attendance this term has been the best ever. Last year we had numerous requests for holidays in the school term amounting to 833 lost days. Sadly I cannot authorise holidays and they do have a big impact on our overall school attendance figure.

Planned events for next half term:

  • Year 12 Awards Evening – 9th November 2017
  • Year 11 Parents Evening – 16th November 2017
  • Year 7 Theatre trip – 5th December 2017
  • Year 10 Raising Achievement Evening – 12th December 2017
  • Christmas Jumper Day charity event – 15th December 2017
  • Victorian Christmas Market – 20th December 2017
  • Year 9 Parent and Options Evening – 31st January 2018

You will have heard about the accident with one of our students injured by a firework, can I urge all parents to remind their children of the dangers of fireworks and to stay safe this holiday.

Finally a reminder that we return to school on Tuesday 7th of November at 8:30am.

Yours sincerely

Mrs D Atkinson
