Education Welfare Benefits

Education welfare benefits are free school meals for children where the families receive:

  • Income Support, or
  • Income based job seekers allowance, or
  • Child tax credit (but not working tax credit), and their annual taxable income is £16,190 or less.

Children of asylum seekers or unaccompanied asylum seeking children are also entitled for free school meals

If you are already claiming housing and/or council tax benefit and you are in receipt of the above benefits then you need not apply as your claim will be dealt with automatically. If you are not claiming housing benefits and/or council tax you may still be entitled to Free School Meals, so please apply using the link below.

Free School Meals

A free meal, provided by the school, which is paid for out of the Education benefit fund and administered alongside housing and council tax benefit. The school will be notified of your entitlement.

How to Apply

If you wish to apply for free school meals, please use form linked below. You will NOT qualify for free school meals if you receive Working Tax Credit.

If you have recently filled in a claim form for Housing Benefit/Council Tax Support your entitlement to free school meals will automatically be calculated and the school will be notified. This form is only to be completed by None Householders ie, you are not the tenant or home owner but live with someone who is.

If you receive income support, employment and support allowance (income related) or job seekers allowance (income based) or if your income (as assessed by the Inland Revenue) does not exceed £16,190.00 and you receive child tax credit but NOT working tax credit, you will be entitled to free school meals for any of your children under 17 years of age on 1st September 2013 who attend school.
